1. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Hemant Soren sworn-in as 9th Chief Minister of Jharkhand in the premises of the Raj Bhavan.

2. The winner of Dadasaheb Phalke Award and a veteran actor Pran died on 12 July 2013 in a Hospital at Mumbai. He died at the age of 93 due to multi-organ failure after prolonged illness and is now survived by hiswife, two sons and a daughter.

3. Amar G. Bose, the visionary Indian-American engineer and inventor, famous for making high-quality Bose audio systems bearing his name and speakers for home users, auditoriums andautomobiles, is dead.

4. Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday asked the states ruled by the party to implement in “letter and spirit” the food security scheme, which it sees as a “game-changer” in the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections. Delhi, where Assembly polls are due by year-end, will be the first state to roll out the scheme on August 20, the birth anniversary of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

6. Penguin imprint tells Vikram Seth to give back Rs 10-cr advance. The new entity, eager to cut cost and streamline operations, has asked author Vikram Seth to return his 1.7 million USD (approx Rs ten crore and thirty lakh) advance, a part of which was paid to him for A Suitable Girl, the ‘jump-sequel’ to his best-selling novel, A Suitable Boy.

7. Goa government will distribute15,000 free laptops amongst students in the state by the end of this month, sources said on Saturday.

8. Axis Bank Ltd on Friday said it had opened its first overseas subsidiary in the UK. Axis Bank UK Ltd, which got a licence from the UK regulators on 19 April, has set up a branch in King Street in London, through which it will accept deposits and make advances and investments, the bank said in an emailed statement.

9. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) asked banks to strictly adhere to customer identification and anti-money laundering rules for walk-in customers when selling insurance, mutual fund, gold andany other products above Rs 50,000. The RBI added its admonition comes after observing that some banks werenot complying with “know-your-customer” rules for walk-in customers.

10. Pakistani teen activist Malala Yousafzai invokes Mahatma Gandhi in her UN speech. The UNcelebrated Malala’s 16th birthdayon Friday as Malala Day with daylong programmes for youth drawn from all over the world.
